Melias cursed. “Alright, time is up. We have to move.”

Without further warning, he took off at a run through the vast complex. His crew was close behind.

Now that the ship had appeared and people understood the danger, the base was in a full-on panic. Not real panic, as many of the people here were trained military, some of which if not most had served in battle during the war, so they knew how to handle emergencies. Still, it was a flurry of frantic activity. It was helpful, though, since no one took notice of them. There were bigger fish to fry, after all.

“Captain, all of these people…” Vasya began, concern in her voice.

“We can’t help them right now. We have to hope that they will be able to do enough to fend for themselves. There’s no time to waste.”

He felt for them, but every second that they weren’t getting the last device was a second that the Lightbringer was one step closer to total victory. They already could decimate the majority of the galaxy. It was sheer luck and knowing that the Lightbringer was arrogant that still gave them a fighting chance.

They reached the outer edge of the ruins. A ring of tall obelisks rose out of the ground, almost like the teeth of a massive leviathan erupting from the earth to swallow the ruins whole. Some of them had their tops broken off or chunks missing. Octopoid lettering ran down the sides of them, but even without any knowledge of the language, he could tell that much of it was too eroded to decipher.

Some scientists ran with them and ahead of them into the ruins. Melias didn’t try to turn them back. Inside the ruins was probably the safest place. As Dr. Park said, they wouldn’t go far in, so it shouldn’t interfere with their efforts to find the device.

Before they passed the outer line of obelisks, he risked a glance back at the Lightbringer’s ship. It loomed overhead, a dark shadow cast over the ruins. Something even more ominous than the swirling clouds and rain. It was low now. At any moment, it would drop its army of mindless onto them. He wondered why the Lightbringer didn’t blast the whole complex with its plasma cannons. Unless this camp had a ray-shielded dome that he didn’t notice, they had no defense. But again, perhaps the camp was too intertwined with the ruins, and they didn’t want to bury the device in rubble by mistake.

It didn’t need to use plasma. Hell, it didn’t need to use the mindless ones, either. It had the ultimate weapon. All the Lightbringer had to do was activate the device, and half the camp would erupt into murderous chaos. He hoped that they had enough dampeners to give themselves a fighting chance. He didn’t love the Union he once fought for, but he didn’t want all of these people to die.

He led his crew through the entry of the temple, with large statues and obelisks towering on each side.
